Established in Manchester, England, in 1968, Barcrest started out producing machines for bingo clubs, arcades and pubs, and quickly became the UK's biggest fruit machine manufacturer.
Innovation followed through the 1980s as the developer's fruities were distributed across Europe and new 'MPU' machines appeared. These motherboard cards allowed for more innovative 'skill-based' features on fruit machines in cafes and arcades (think Trail Bonuses and 'board games'-style rounds).
Like a much-loved toy being passed down to new children, Barcrest has experienced various takeovers in recent years.
It was a market leader in offline machines even in the late 1990s - manufacturing and selling over 35,000 in 1997 alone - but attracted the gaze of a much bigger fish.
International Game Technology (IGT) UK bought out the firm in 1998 in a deal worth £42 million as IGT aimed to gain a foothold in the European market. However, Barcrest still continued to develop the games under their own name.
Then, in 2011, IGT sold off Barcrest to Scientific Games in a deal worth £35 million. Scientific bought out another slots giant, Bally, in 2014, for $5.1 billion, which brings Barcrest and Bally under the same roof for the first time.

£500 jackpot machines have been with us for some time now, and there are many different varieties created by several of the major operators. All of these companies create and run their machines in a unique manor that isn't reproduced by anyone other than themselves. |
First: Percentages
Always check the percentage of the machine you are playing. This may not seem important, but it is extremely important, especially if you are a frequent player. All the percentage information is displayed on the main screen or in the help section. A higher percentage gives a better play experience. In the long term you will get more features, higher value features, more wins, and higher value wins.
The more popular machines have percentages in the range of 90% up to 94% which basically equates to the operator earning between 6p and 10p for every pound you play in the machine. The company CMS, who have a tiny share of this market operate their machines at between the 86% and 88% and should be totally avoided.
Currently all betting shops operate their £500 machines on 92%. Arcades generally operate between 90% and 94%, so shop around to find the best percentages, and motorway service stations are nearly all on 90%, with just a few exceptions.
A lot of players miss this one out, but not all the £500 jackpot machines are random. There is no legal requirement to be random or fixed percentage, but they do have to have it written somewhere on the machine which of the two it is.
Random machines should operate on the premiss that each spin has an equal chance of success as the previous spin -NO MATTER HOW MUCH HAS GONE IN IT – and each spin has exactly the same odds for any prize as any other spin. It is important that you believe that the random machines are random, this will stop you assuming you will win if someone has lost a large amount, or an assumption that you have to win eventually because it has taken so much money.
Non random machines: These machines will have wording along the lines of 'this machine is compensated and may be influenced by previous play'. Those words pretty much sum up what a compensated machine is. It is on a fixed percentage and will run through cycles of playing well and playing not so well. This area of gaming is quite confusing and the manufacturers guard the exact details very strongly. All £500 machines (indeed all fruit machines in general) have playing profiles as part of the way a machine will behave during play. To confuse matters, the profiles may be changed in the settings menu of some machines.
Basically a machines profile determines the odds of winning a prize, these odds can be broken down in to sub-sections, for example (not necessarily the correct odds): The odds on getting 3 discs on Barcrest's Cashino machine are 500 to 1, then the odds are further broken down to determine the win you will get from that feature. The odds of hitting the jackpot from those three discs may be 800 to 1, while the odds of hitting the jackpot during regular play may be 6000 to 1, with all the other prizes having different values attached to them, with the lower prizes having the better odds.
The important thing to remember regarding a machines profile is whether you have a chance of a jackpot or not. Generally a machine with a high profile setting will pay larger wins less often. A machine with a low profile setting will pay more small wins more frequently.
Project's Mega Bars for example, doesn't pay jackpots, or the odds are so slim that it is improbable to expect a chance of hitting the jackpot. But it does pay a lot of £50 - £80 wins in regular cycles.
Four: Gambling
Many of the new line of £500 machines have a gamble option, this is a random gamble on all the machines that state they are random. If you manage to gamble a win to £50, it doesn't necessarily mean you would have won that £50 had you not gambled. They all let you gamble up to the £500 jackpot, however some work different in the way they allow you to gamble. Barcrest for example, have a true odds gamble with various odds available. The other companies, unable to copy Barcrest's design have gone for the less exciting 50/50 with either a red or black or a double or nothing type affair.
The gamble options add another dimension to the playability of the machine, and should you have the nerve, it can pay off quiet handsomely.
